India has been blessed with a large repository of indigenous bovine population with rich bio-diversity. There are 50 well-defined breeds of cattle and 17 breeds of buffaloes.
An anecdote from Kanchi Mahaperiyavar’s period
Once a woman about 30 years old came to have the darshan of the Kanchi Mahan. She had been married for 8 years, but had no child yet. Her life had been very disturbed because of this
and she prayed for a solution. The Sage from Kanchi, advised her to get a cow and calf, keep them at home and take care of them. She took the advice sincerely and got a cow and calf.
As she started taking care of the cow and calf, her mind started getting filled with love and all negative thoughts in her started disappearing. As she started exerting her body to work more, her body became healthier. By inhaling the odour of the cow dung, the harmful germs around started getting driven away and her body became fitter to bear a child. When she came to the Mahan after 1 year – this time with a newborn - the Mahan explained all these reasons to her as to how a cow and a calf actually helped her case. The Cow mother gave birth to a mother here!
The conclusion that commences things! As we began earlier here, all living beings do their bit to protect nature. We humans tend to save too much for the future, sometimes through unfair means and end up over-exploiting nature. It may look like a huge task if we think of undoing all the damage we have done. Is it even possible to do undo centuries of havoc we have created? Actually, its possible to an extent: By allowing Mother Nature’s special child – Mother cow to live peacefully for as long as it can and slowly keep repairing the damages that have been done. These cows, especially our native breeds, are our best chances to revive nature and restore its goodness to our future generations.
We have made millions so let us repay a bit so as to not become examples of this

Desi cows usually produce milk rich in A2 beta-casein, which many argue, is a better version of dairy when compared to the milk of the Jersey which is a mix of both A1 and A2 or the HF which is predominantly A1.
